When your feet hurt, even the simplest of activities can be painful. Leanne Jakubowski, a patient of Derek Slack, DPM, at Starr Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, had begun a journey to a healthier lifestyle when foot pain stopped her in her tracks.
“I had just recently started working out more and taking better care of myself, and in the process of doing so, my foot was causing me extreme pain,” said Leanne. “One of my family members recommended I see Dr. Slack, and I am so happy that I did.”
After first trying conservative treatment options, Dr. Slack performed surgery to repair Leanne’s Achilles tendon and correct a Haglund’s deformity. Leanne was concerned about having surgery due to having Prediabetes, a condition related to higher-than-normal blood sugar levels, which can affect the body’s ability to heal.
“I went to Dr. Slack because I wanted an honest opinion [about having surgery] since I am prediabetic. He looked over my medical history to make the decision for having my surgery because he knew that having Prediabetes was my one worry,” said Leanne. “Dr. Slack was very upfront, honest and very forthcoming; if I had any questions, he answered them quickly. The entire experience, from the first visit to surgery to physical therapy, was fantastic. If I had a question or concern, I could contact Dr. Slack and he would answer me almost immediately.”
Following her recovery, Leanne has returned to the gym regularly. “Going to the gym is very important to me. That was my goal – to be able to go back to my workout routine,” she said.
“I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Slack,” Leanne added. “Following surgery, he called me personally to make sure I was feeling comfortable. Anytime I went in for an appointment, he took extra time to make sure that any questions I, or my husband, had were answered. They made sure that I had all the things that I needed to navigate my home after surgery, and they took the time to do all the paperwork for my work. The service I received from Dr. Slack and the staff at Starr Orthopedics made me feel like they were taking care of only me.”
